JUST IN CASE…
by rsbakker
you were wondering why people think I’m such an asshole…
I was just checking out the Second Apocalypse trailer again (for the umpteenth time) and a link to this video was tiled in with the others. I howled at the way the two of us tried to look as though we were listening to the translations and either a) agreeing with the Spanish version of our insight, or b) expressing approval of the quality of a translation! I forgot all about it: La Semana Negra, organized by the inimitable Paco Taibo II, an annual celebration of genre in Gijon, Spain, and, get this, one of the biggest book extravaganzas in the world. What a magical time that was. Jim Sallis. Practical jokes. George and Paris. Booze, laughs, and greasy, greasy northern Spanish cuisine.
At the time George was talking about the Game of Thrones being in development, and as I write this, HBO is running a spot on the television in the livingroom. Surreal.
Hey Scott. I hope you read this. I watched the trailer and it was good to see you. I truly wish you well and pray that things are good for you and your family.
Gary! Thank you so much. I miss you my brother.
Likewise. Lives wander in different directions sometimes. We should catch up at one of the crossroads.
A pleasure to watch this over breakfast (as it happens). So cool to see Martin’s appreciation of The Prince of Nothing.
I remember I was floored at the time, because I was under the understanding that it was a panel discussion about fantasy, not a panel discussion about *my books* (leading up to the presentation of an award, no less). I remember looking at George and not quite believing it all… (I never thought my series was publishable until I read Game of Thrones, and I really doubt it would have done as well as it has were it not for his success).
Great stuff, Scott!
And my preorder for The Great Ordeal has been thrown into the mix!
Aarhus by-laws require that all domestic canines be properly leashed in the vicinity of literature… just saying 😉
Preach, brother, preach!
But… that… would… make me an asshole!
Or… the sage of the future?
How is “Three Roses” going?
Hey Michael! Believe it or not, TR is going extremely well. I’m really excited to unleash it on the world… Just have to finish the damn thing.
Finish it! And then take my damn money!
The Kosmos Biblioth is marked private?
my GAD begs to differ with the cognitive value of doubt!
Not sure I quite believed that even back then.
Nice video, it was the first time I heard you live, Scott! When will you come back to Europe? Have you given any thought to Worldcon 75 in Helsinki? The timing would be right since by August 2017, the Unholy Consult might have unleashed the Second Apocalypse.
Love the interview, only a matter of time until the name Earwa becomes a household name like Westeros. Really love your work, and thanks for keeping us updated with your blog. Preorder has been made, just ticking off the months until it gets here. All the best!
I agree. The books deserve a wider audience.
I also find it strange that I don’t hear other Epic Fantasy authors mention Scott or his work, more. Because when you read their books they’ve clearly been heavily influenced by his writing.
Weird.
Aurax you again not to make such puns!
I’d like to say something clever about desecrating humor–i think i could help the inchoroi with the application of theit values to the subject of jokes. All ur jokes are die with meh
I don’t get it? I was just making a bad pun 🙂
🙂 lol, i meant i was the one desecrating humor–this is definitely my daughter’s opinion of my kind of joke. i just can’t help myself: “dad, i’m hungry,” “hi Hungry, i’m dad!” *drops the mic*
Such dad joke!
That was enjoyable.
The Poppa Tolkien comment made me think about David Eddings (who seemed to always refer to Tolkien as Poppa Tolkien), the man who made me a fan of epic fantasy and turned me into the voracious reader I am today.
Weren’t the crusades, in large part, a response to the Muslim invasion of Christian territories? Which included coastal raids, capturing cities, and mass enslavement of Christians? It just seems like Christians, white Christians in particular, are always the target of attack and scorn in pop historical analysis. However, there are two sides to the Crusades. Not that I disagree with your views on the absurdity of religious violence, but I think that the motives for the crusades were not as unwarranted as they are often made out to be.
But that’s for the best right? It’s best that those more prone to identify with crusaders focus on the folly and savagery of the crusaders, and those more prone to identify with their medieval Islamic foes focus on their folly and savagery. Otherwise we would simply be buying into groupishness, being stone age puppets of stone age chauvinism, the very kind of chauvinism that is likely to cut our throats as our technology becomes ever more powerful.
We need a culture that cuts against groupishness if we’re to have any hope of giving our kids a chance to fuck things up.
There’s also a groupishness in judging anything that isn’t a perfectly clean response.
Any disagreement about the Crusades that starts with the idea of “Muslim territories” and “Christian territories” is likely to end by recapitulating the Crusades, that is to say with the disagreeing parties trying to hack each other up with sharp pieces of metal.
