Not sure if this is half-joking, but Bakker posted a few weeks ago that July 2016 is the projected release date for The Great Ordeal (book 3) and next year we should see book four The Unholy Consult. And then someday, hopefully, the Series That Can’t Be Named (yet). Although, I have a feeling the last part of the last book will somehow reveal what that next series would be called.
He did? I knew amazon posted TGO’s july 6th release, but last I heard Bakker himself never confirmed nor denied the listing was accurate. Do you have a link for TGO’s release confirmation?
The July date you ( and Overlook as well) confirmed is still some ways off but isn’t it it in danger by now? What are your thoughts on this? I see that Orbit UK hasn’t listed the book yet, and they normally would have by now. It seems we are in for more bad news?
I’ve been leaning on them for an explicit timetable for several weeks now, and still nada, so I’m concerned definitely. All there is to do is to wait and see.
Looks grand and haunting. Not merely an unholy place, but wicked. Doubtless wicked things will occur there. And being a work of fiction sprung from your mind I suppose that makes you a bit wicked… unless like Melville you come out feeling as “spotless as a lamb”. Hehe.
Anyway, I’ve solved your riddle. Lean in, lads – this is the ending. Kellhus is merely a distraction while Frodo sneaks around back to plop the ring in the volcano. Hah! I cannot be fooled.
Ahem. Truth is, I can’t wait to read this, Scott. My gut makes a knot when I think about what’s to come… all the wicked wicked… err… wickedness! It can’t come soon enough.
Actually scratch that. I don’t think Kellhus is so much Aragorn as a young Sauron (in his beguiling corporeal form), Akka as a sort of horny disenchanted Sam/Gandalf, and Sorweel as a Frodo but with a “tear” instead of a ring.
But what does that make the Consult? A surrogate Morgoth and co?
Cool. I’m hoping this map is to be included in The Great Ordeal and this indicates progression towards getting the unholy holy into my bookshelf.
It raises a the question; why isn’t Golgotteroth a lake?
Apophagia seems to break down as “eating habit that changes, or detaches” according to the Greek roots. Seems like the dehumanization of Khellus’ soldiers is going to find a new nadir.
“It raises a the question; why isn’t Golgotteroth a lake?” I’m going to put my money on a drain straight to the Outside. It goes into Yatwer’s basement and that’s why she’s so pissed.
You know, if my pet theory that Earwa is a death star is the case, then that could damn well be true! Golgoterath is described as having lakes inside the space ship, so water is getting through. What if they went so far through the fake crust of Earwa they got a hole to the machines below? You may be on to way more than you realise, BF! 🙂
I thought people would like! though it looks like I sneezed on the thing a couple times when I look at the full size version… I’ll have to attach a note for the art department.
Between that line in TJE about the march becoming legend, that one King noted for being a screwup in the ancestor lists, and now “contemporaries” inventing terminology, it seems like a point is being made about the Ordeal succeeding.
Almost seems like the Ordeal is just a big diversion…
Looks really great. Is there any reason to Irsûlor becoming Ursulor? I’ve noticed a couple different spellings of place and character names between books and was wondering if it was intentional. Harnilias to Harnilas etc.
“The Field Appalling.” Love it! Though with Ishterebinth so close to Golgotterath, it makes you wonder why Kellhus wouldn’t just assume they’d been corrupted already.
love how the occlusion is a circular mountain range. the last summits of immanent transcendence that havent been drowned by the tidal waves of natural scientific revision/reduction
Fuck yeah! It is cool! Bravo sir! Tweeting…
Well that’s just awesome. Thanks for the update
So peaceful, looking down from orbit. Like it’s just asleep.
Have you got mad inking skills as well, Scott!?
Also damn, that’s a f’n huge crater!
It’s true–it’s going to inspire some new humor like “Yo mama’s so fat, she calls her belt ‘The Occlusion.'”
I will be blunt – where is the goddamn book.

That’s still the working date, but that date was set with Erik Hane before his surprise departure: I still don’t have a new editor at Overlook.
Hi Scott,

Nooo! I can feel our merest fraction slipping away…do we still dare hope for 2016?

Uh, if you think about it – Khellus is the One Ring. One to rule them all, and with the Darkness bind them.
Maybe that makes Sorweel or Mimara a Frodo analogue? I guess we’ll find out in Golgotteroth.
Akka definitely Gollum

Moenghus = Tom Bombadil
Can’t wait. Also, fantasy maps torment me with their endless suggestion of plotlines and their unknowns.

You have got to stop snorting qirri Scott. It’s way better in muffins.
Fuck ya. Great stuff, man.

I do do it on purpose (because the lack of naming conventions is part and parcel of ancient scholarship), but not in the case of Harnilias!
Didn’t even notice that one.

God. This is weapons grade plutonium for the eyeballs.
To quote the great Slim Pickens, Yee ha!
Scott,
Is Oloreg the ruined mountain/crater of Viri?
