The Other Lidless Eye…
by rsbakker
Overlook has released the last of Jason Deem’s spectacular visual teasers drawn from The Great Ordeal, this one featuring Mimara and the mystery of the Judging Eye.
Adam has posted A History of Earwa, Part 5: The Holy War, his conclusion to his epic recounting of the epic histories forming the backdrop to The Second Apocalypse. The TPB piece on secondary worlds and histories I mentioned previously is almost finished, so I hope to have it up soon. What Adam is doing is providing an alternate interpretation of an alternate interpretation of fictitious sources reporting events that never happened. This is pretty cool, like disentangling the form of an important socio-cognitive mechanism from the hair of the real. The degree to which his account layers my account allows you to see the way ‘realism’ or ‘credibility’ has to be a function of the organization of information as opposed to any source. Why should that be? Why should the compounding of interpretations generate ‘realism effects’?
The Darkness that Comes Before has been listed as one of “The Top Ten Best Fantasy Books” over at Top Ten Plus.
And for those who are interested in the philosophical underpinnings of the series, I stumbled across an old article of mine on the topic dating from 2000, some time prior to the publication of TDTCB: “Why Fantasy and Why Now?” It’s bizarre bumping into younger strangers possessing your name—yet another radical transformation in our cognitive habitat, I’m sure. Yet another reason to buy another sack of rice at the supermarket.
Actually, one more to go, revealed tomorrow. 🙂
Cool. That means one more gorgeous post!
My copy will be here in less than 12 hours. the slog stops for a couple of days 🙂
I never said the journey was short!
It wouldn’t be worth the walk if it was short. Finished it last night. As i said elsewhere I feel like one of those peeps that memorise a deck of cards in 52 seconds, then have to sit for hours thinking before they can get the order correct.
So much i need to go back and ponder and re-read. In fact i think your greatest strength as an author is the re-readability of the story.
I really do get out what i put in, which is about as fair an exchange as you can get in life 🙂

I’ve a feeling that position is going to loop back to it base, similar to a certain other loop – why not think the world is extended family and a more cryptic one at that? That those ‘primitive’ notions are probably more in line with life forms which are causally based in a world that is causally based. Particularly with life forms contaminating the bulk of the skin of the world.
Also did this post get modified and the comments wiped?
I tweaked it a couple time, but right after it was posted, so no. Did one of you posts go missing? There wasn’t anything I could find in the spam folder…
Well, I could have sworn I made a post about the cover art having a Sauron’s eye look to it. Downside of doubting myself is I can only say ‘I could have sworn’. Maybe some check box was set to erase old comments on a significant edit? Hard enough having a brain doing things without asking without wordpress doing it as well! But dats computers, innit!? :p
I think this is my favorite of the promo pieces.
I finished the ARC over the weekend and *wow*, you did great work! The pacing was blistering, and you didn’t hold back all the good stuff until the end. I was also impressed that it didn’t feel cut short, as I feared it would after the split was announced. I think it stands well as a separate volume. I’ll be starting my audio reread tomorrow to catch all the stuff I missed!
Thanks for the great read, Scott!
Thank you litg! Remember that dosage is always the key to a good buzz, tho…
Haha, no worries, I switch between several books and podcasts regularly. I’ve got a long daily commute, so this helps keep things fresh and dosages nonlethal.
Deem’s final teaser before tomorrow’s “official” release.

On the “Why Fantasy and Why Now?” piece: do you find fault with any of the musings made by Past Bakker?
Looking forward to the “secondary worlds and histories” post :).
TGO release hype is real!
Well, I was still holding onto my intentionalism, back then. I still thought there was something to be saved.
The way I see it, I got off that sinking ship at the nick of time. Thanks!
Hey Bakker. Just wanted to say TGO was great. Why did you stop answering questions at tsa forum, mate? Given up on it or just not finding any questions worth answering right now?
I went on vacation, and now I’m up to my eyeballs catching up, is all. I’m glad you liked the book!
Book has just been shipped from my Danish seller! Can’t wait to start reading tomorrow evening! 🙂
Congrats on the release Scott!
Thanks Lars! Enjoy. Belabour others with lurid descriptions and maudlin praise!
I got my digital copy of TGO this morning and expect UPS to deliver the
physical copy today!
Congratulations on the new book, Scott!
Awesome possum! Thanks dharm. It’s been a long time coming to be sure!
hi Scott, I pre-ordered The Great ORdeal from Amazon.co.uk, the kindle version.
They told me I would get it today but today they’re saying i won’t get it until septemer 29, 2016. Do you know why they’ve delayed it 6 months? Do i really have to wait until the end of september???
The UK version was always going to come out in September. You should have ordered the ebook from Amazon us or ca.
Can cancel that order, grab an address in canada from google, change address on kindle and in amazon and then get it, remember to put your address back to normal after. That would have been my plan if i was getting the kindle version. However B&N had kept to the 5th July date, so i just got a physical copy shipped to me for an extortionate price.
Or just order the Overlook edition from Amazon.co.uk 🙂 Just search for The Great Ordeal and select the one that’s actually out now (it should have Overlook as the publisher). They seem to have limited stock though.
Thanks all. I just felt upset with amazon UK, I can’t understand why Amazon US and CA would release the kindle version, but not Amazon UK.
I’ve spoken to them, they can’t do anything. Just sucks because I’ve been waiting so long.
I would pay twice and buy the hardcover version but I”m on vacation and wouldn’t even receive it until I returned home, which is why the kindle version was so important.
Just a real bummer
If you check out this thread, before and after the post linked, John, as other John mentioned above, a number of Second Apocalypse members have been able to buy the book/ebook from outside NA: http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1925.msg28540#msg28540
Yeah that’s me in the thread 🙂 (Themerchant) 🙂
Congrats on the publication, man! I’ve ordered the book and the audiobook. Looking forward to having the real thing in my hands. Did you manage to get those last-minute edits in?
I just finished The Great Ordeal and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now begins the seemingly interminable wait for The Unholy Consult, but I’ll probably have to reread the series again at least once, but probably twice before next summer.
Not particularly interminable if the book comes out next year as confirmed by Scott.
I hope so.
